Overview
Ankle fusion, also known as ankle arthrodesis, is a procedure that can help to alleviate pain in the ankle. The procedure uses minimal incisions to reduce scarring and improve recovery times. With specialised instruments, the surgeon will remove the worn-down cartilage between the bones and ankle and fuse them into one bone. This process eliminates joint motion, thereby reducing pain coming from the arthritic joint.
Sometimes the procedure required additional, combination procedures to achieve the desired results.
The procedure can take up to 12 months to recover from and usually takes up to 4 hours to perform.
Prices in London
Ankle Fusion surgery in London will typically cost between £8000 and £9500. The final price can depend on a number of factors.
However, once the price has been offered there will be no hidden costs and the price will cover all fees relating to the procedure and hospital stay, including:
- Accommodation
- Nursing care
- Surgical theatre fees
- Physiotherapy
- Imaging costs
- Medication
- Pathology
Following the treatment, the surgeon will also create an aftercare plan to help patients maximise results. These include:
- Seven days worth of any medications prescribed by the surgeon
- A standard mobility aid like crutches or a cane
- Ten post-operative physiotherapy sessions
- One post-operative X-ray
- Post-operative appointments with the surgeon
The Consultation
The consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon is important to a patient's Ankle Fusion surgery journey. It typically takes anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour to complete. The surgeon and the patient will discuss the following:
- Medical history and overall health
- Expectations and realistic outcomes from surgery
- Recovery and aftercare information
It will also include
- a physical examination
- imaging of the ankle, if required
The consultation allows the patient to ask any queries and questions they may still have about the surgery itself, about pre-op or post-op requirements and about aftercare. Patients should always make efforts to communicate clearly at every stage of the process and ask any questions to ensure they are only committing to surgery when they feel informed about every stage.
