Mr Andrew Murphy is a senior consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon with extensive experience in his field. He is currently practicing at the Plymouth Nuffield Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (Derriford Hospital), and the Peninsula Major Trauma Centre. Mr Murphy specializes in orthopaedic surgery, including arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery for the shoulder, knee, and elbow, joint replacement surgery, sports injuries, upper limb surgery, trauma surgery, and medical education. He has a particular interest in complex and revision cases referred from colleagues in Plymouth and the south west. Mr Murphy obtained his medical degree from the University of Bristol in 1992 and has since completed surgical training in Bristol, Bath, and Plymouth. He has been awarded two national surgical awards, the RCSEd/Ethicon Travelling Fellowship and the BESS European Travelling Fellowship, which have allowed him to study arthroscopic procedures with renowned surgeons worldwide. Mr Murphy also holds a Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine and is involved in teaching, lecturing, and examining in this field. Mr Andrew Murphy holds several positions and memberships in addition to his clinical practice. These include being the founding programme lead of the UK's first multi-disciplinary MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Exeter, senior faculty member of the "Watanabe Club" for teaching advanced arthroscopic surgery, co-organizer of the Stryker Shoulder Soft Tissue Masterclass course, lecturer and examiner at the MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine at University College London, and various international, national, and local posts in Sports Medicine. He is also an honorary Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Consultant for several professional sports teams. Mr Murphy's NHS posts include Consultant Surgeon in Orthopaedics, Trauma, and Sports Injuries at University Hospitals Plymouth and the Peninsula Major Trauma Centre. In terms of qualifications, Mr Murphy obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1998 and his FRCS(Trauma&Orth) in 2003. He holds a membership in several professional bodies, including the General Medical Council, the British Orthopaedic Association, and the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine. Mr Murphy has subspecialties in knee, shoulder, and elbow surgeries, and his areas of interest include various orthopaedic procedures, sports medicine, trauma surgery, and medical education and research. He is registered on the GMC Specialist Register since 2004 and has research interests in shoulder instability, shoulder arthritis, shoulder arthroscopy, trauma surgery, and medical education.
